Assessment Prayer

  1. Get comfortable, relax and close your eyes, and quiet your mind. Take a few deep breaths. Focus on this time and be present. Pay attention to God’s presence here with you, right now. Focus on God’s deep and lasting love for you. Ask God to help you to recall your day. Give this time to God to reveal to you whatever He wants.
  2. Review last the 24 hours: Beginning with the present moment, work backwards thinking about the different events of the past 24 hours. Remember the small pleasures: a good conversation, a good night’s sleep, a beautiful sunset, or time with family. These are all gifts from God. Thank God for them.
  3. With God: ask yourself how you brought your strengths, sense of humor, abilities, encouragement, patience, kindness, or generosity, to others in the last 24 hours? Pay attention to the details. What were your feelings? What motivated you to respond to certain situations in the way that you did?
  4. Ask God to help you look back again over this period of time and reflect on the ways in which God was present to you. Where do you see God at work? In joy, fears, suffering, work, and play? In acts of service and study? In an event, person, sound, nature, music, or action?
  5. When or where in the past 24 hours did you feel you were cooperating most fully with God’s action in your life? When did you love? When or where in the past 24 hours did you feel you were resisting God’s presence and action? Are there actions or thoughts that require God’s forgiveness and/or the forgiveness of others?
  6. Search for any patterns or habits during the course of the day. Do you have coffee at the same time? Do you chat for a few minutes with a friend or co-worker? Are you always staying late at work? As you detect these patterns, what are you feeling? Do these habits help you face your day with love? Do they hinder you from facing your day with love? In what ways do you believe God may be calling you to a new awareness, change of heart, or different action?
  7. Finally, talk with Jesus about your day. Maybe there was something in your day that you don’t feel good about. Tell Jesus about this and express your disappointment and ask him to be with you when you face that moment again. Allow yourself to feel the sorrow in your heart as you share this, but also remember and give thanks for Christ’s continual restoration of your heart. Remember all of the good moments of your day and thank Jesus for His presence with you in those moments.
